A major highlight of the collection of Terry and Ralph Kovel , this exceptional vase from George Ohr was sold to the Kovels from the collection of James Carpenter. The vase has two ribbon handles, incised decoration to body, and a pink glaze with sponged-on cobalt, orange, and raspberry glazes. Underside signature of ‘G.E. Ohr Biloxi, Miss.’.($35,000-$45,000).
On November 1st , starting at 11:00 AM Eastern, the auction houses Toomey & Co and Rago are honored to present The Life Collection of Terry & Ralph Kovel, authors, founders of Kovels.com, and antiques experts who have been dubbed the “Duke and Duchess of the antiques world.” The works featured in The Life Collection of Terry & Ralph Kovel are a representation of the husband/wife team’s varied interests and specialties with a sizable selection of American art pottery. Anchoring the collection is a large group of works by George E. Ohr, the “Mad Potter of Biloxi” and Taxile Doat
The works from Ohr are being “presented for the first time in half a century, and only the second time since they left the Ohr family in Biloxi.” Led by the Exceptional vase (est. $35,000-45,000), this offering includes the Exceptional and Rare double Cadogan teapot (est. $30,000-40,000), the Rare snake vase (est. $10,000-15,000), and the especially humorous Rare potato trophy (est. $10,000-15,000).
Collectors can find additional works by Frederick Hurten Rhead, Grueby Faience Pottery, Fulper Pottery, Cowan Pottery, and Rookwood Pottery with a number of “No Reserve” lots.
Further highlights of the Kovels’ art pottery collection include Taxile Doat’s Rare and Exceptional vase (est. $10,000-15,000) and the Martin Brothers Pottery Double face jug (est. $4,500-6,500).
The collection is currently available for viewing at Rago in Lambertville through November 1st and the auction accepts advanced bids, telephone biddings and live online bidding.

On November 2nd, Toomey & Co. presents its next Keramics & Rookwood: American & European Art Pottery auction with close to 400 lots curated by specialist Riley Humler. This 481-lot auction includes vases, bowls, pitchers, and more, along with decorative items like landscape plaques and sculpture, this signature sale features works by notable artists and makers from primarily the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The well known artists of Rookwood are represented: Grace Young, Carl Schmidt, Sara Sax, Kataro Shirayamadani, Edward T. Hurley, Arthur Conant, and Lorinda Epply. Examples will also be available from other highly respected potters and potteries, including: Van Briggle, George E. Ohr, Fulper, Bennett, Newcomb College, Roseville, Nikolaus Kannhäuser, Clément Massier, Nils Barck, and others.
Highlights include: a pair of fine and rare Coromandel turkey bookends ($2,500-$3,500), an early yellow vase from Artus Van Briggle ($3,000-$4,000), a rare matte painted vase with oak leaves and acorns ($1,500-$2,500), a Monumental Black Opal vase with rooster and hen under a blooming cherry tree by Harriet Elizabeth Wilcox ($4,000-$6,000), a few fine and tall Iris glazed vasea with poppies ($5,000-$7,500) by Carl Schmidt – there are iris glaze vases offered by Sara Sax with “Jack-in-the-Pulpit” ($700-$900) and Magnolia Blossoms ($400-$600) respectively, a rare standard glaze vase with carved roses by Kataro Shirayamadani ($3,000-$5,000), a number of Carl Schmidt vellum works showing the harbors of Venice, an unusual Limoges style pitcher ($1,000-$1,500) with “cavorting crabs,” and others.
