Pasadena, CA 91101 (locations given after purchase of tickets)
Next month, Pasadena will bring the Arts & Crafts movement back into the spotlight with a weekend exploration of the beloved era of architecture design with bungalow tours, a selling show, and demonstrations.
Pasadena Heritage, an organization dedicated to educating and highlighting the historic neighborhoods and sites of Pasadena’s past, will hold “Preservation Pasadena Part III: Timeless Treasures: The Lasting Treasures of the Arts & Craftsman Movement” a schedule of tours and a free exhibition of artisans and demonstrators.
The tours include the South Marengo neighborhood and a Bungalow Courts bus tour. South Marengo has long been a prestigious Pasadena neighborhood, showcasing both historic Craftsman and Victorian residences that reflect evolving architectural taste. In 1977, concerned about the demolition of these structures, local preservationists founded Pasadena Heritage.
The Pasadena Bungalow Courts tour explores housing that made up a bungalow court served people looking for an alternative to apartment housing, while also accommodating a desire for community and fellowship. The first recognized bungalow court was built in 1909 in the Craftsman style, but bungalow courts were built in many styles, such as Spanish, Colonial, English, and Mission. Units were typically arranged around a lawn or planted courtyard. Over 100 bungalow courts are still in existence, with many of them having a historic designation.
The shows and events will include a special presentation by woodworker Dennis Hayes. As a guide for the Maloof Master Woodworker tours, Dennis shares his expertise through workshops and unique designs that reflect the principles of fine craftsmanship. Following the talk, please join us for a wine and cheese reception, where you’ll have the chance to meet Dennis and continue the discussion.
