Treadway-Toomey Sale Highlights
Treadway Toomey Auctions held their first 20th Century Art & Design auction of 2017 on March 4th. The sale included nearly 200 lots of early 20th century design including furniture, pottery, lighting, silver, jewelry and other decorative arts, which were predominantly from the American Arts & Crafts movement. Makers from across the United States, active during the period, were offered throughout the sale and many items preformed very well against their pre-auction estimates.
A breakdown of some of the highlights representing craftsmen and craftswomen from seven states can be found below:
An unusual Newcomb Pottery handled vase elaborately decorated with a grapevine by Sara Bloom Levy (d. 1955) measuring 5.5″ diameter x 9″ high with a pre-sale estimate of $5,000 – $7,000 sold for $10,000.
A Teco two-handled vase, #266, made in Chicago with a matte green glaze and impressed mark (5″ diameter x 11″ high) came in with a pre-sale estimate of $1000-$1500 but sold for $2000.
A sterling silver, footed and handled bowl from the Kalo Shop in Park Ridge, IL, circa 1905, with stamped marks and engraved Gothic W monogram, (11 1/4″ w. x 8 3/8″ d. x 3 3/4″ h.) soared to $2500 from a pre-sale estimate of $800-$1000 (pictured top).
Also from the Kalo Shop, a sterling silver cherry blossoms and leaves puffy necklace, model #153L, with stamped marks, (17 3/4″ l.) more than doubled its pre-sale estimate of $500-$700, selling for $1625.
A Tiffany Studios seven-light lily table lamp, #385, favrile glass, patinated bronze with shades all signed and the base marked and numbered (10″ dia. x 21″ h.) blew past its pre-sale estimate of $12,000 – $17,000 to sell for $21,250.
