Two Previews in One: a Rago Arts Auction and a Design Show in St. Paul, MN

Our fall event previews continue with not one, but two events happening this weekend – One an exciting and rare auction featuring a wide array of Arts & Crafts items through leading U.S. Auction house Rago Arts and the other a 2-day yearly show featuring the best of both antique and contemporary furniture and accessories from the American Arts & Crafts Movement.

We first turn our attention to Rago’s Early 20th Century Design Auction on Saturday, September 22nd will feature plenty of Arts & Crafts items in addition to Decorative arts, furnishings and art glass of the early 20th century – and features the Reese Collection of Lalique Glass. Rago’s notable recent sales include work by Stickley, Tiffany Studios, Majorelle, Zsolnay, Galle, Grueby, Ohr, SEG, Rookwood, Lalique, Newcomb College, Daum, Greene & Greene, Martin Brothers, Marblehead, Baumann, Rohlfs, Van Briggle, Rhead, Ellis, Heinrichs and more. Rago’s is honored to present this fifty-four-lot single-owner Lalique collection featuring many fine and rare pieces, including an amber “Gros Scarabées” vase, electric blue “Courges” vase, amber “Penthièvre” vase, and a rare “Oiseau de Feu” surtout.

The exhibition hours are September 15–20, 12 noon–5:00 pm with extended hours on September 21, 12 noon–7:00 pm. Rago will be open the day of the sale on Saturday, September 22nd at 9:00am – the auction will begin at 10:00am.

This weekend not only sees Rago’s exciting auction take place, but will also feature an exciting show in Minnesota. The 19th Annual Twin Cities Arts & Crafts 20th Century Design Show and Sale will be held in St. Paul, Minnesota, Saturday and Sunday, September 22nd and 23rd at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds at the Progress Center Building.

For the last nineteen years autumn’s approach has signaled the annual gathering of Arts & Crafts enthusiasts in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. For nearly two decades attendees and exhibitors have ardently supported the Twin Cities Show, helping it grow into the largest and longest running event in the Midwest dedicated to the furniture and accessories of The American Arts & Crafts Movement. Fall’s approach reminds us that this year’s show will soon be here (Sept. 22 & 23)!

This year’s Twin Cities Arts & Crafts 20 Century Design Show and Sale is once again excited to have some of the foremost galleries, crafts people and dealers in the country. Offering a rare opportunity to compare and contrast some of the best examples of Arts & Crafts handiwork, all at one time and all in one building.

In addition, there will be two presentations offered on Saturday;

Tim Pearson current owner of “Trail’s End” the estate of William D Gates, will give a talk at 11:30 AM titled; “Teco Pottery and its Founder William D Gates”

Tim will speak on both collecting Teco Pottery, as well as his experiences and challenges restoring Gates’ retirement home “Trail’s End”.

Jody Zwiefel of Kindred Styles Antiques will give a talk at 12:30 PM titled;“Decorating with Period Arts & Crafts Textiles”

Jody’s talk will focus on how Textiles were an important decorative element in the interiors of homes during the Arts & Crafts period and still are today for collectors. Jodie will also share her insights on how to re-purpose and upscale damaged textiles.

The show is all under one roof and one weekend only, Saturday, September 22nd from 10am – 5pm and Sunday, September 23rd from 11am – 3pm at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, Progress Center Building. You’ll find furniture, metalwork, pottery, textiles, art and lighting; everything from Stickley, Limbert, Roycroft, and Rookwood, to the esteemed Minneapolis Handicraft Guild.

It’s a unique show, unlike anything else in the upper Midwest. The 19th Annual Twin Cities Arts & Crafts 20th Century Design Show and Sale offers the highest quality in both antiques and reproductions, all in a spacious sunlit turn of the century venue.

With free parking and admission at only $7.00, it is most certainly the biggest bang for your buck that weekend. Don’t miss it or you will be kicking yourself until February!
