Treadway-Toomey Auction Slated For Saturday
Treadway Toomey Auctions is holding their next 20th Century Art & Design auction this Saturday, September 16th. The sale has over 700 lots of fine furniture, decorative arts and fine art. The sale and preview will be held at John Toomey Gallery located at 818 North Boulevard, Oak Park, Illinois and will begin at 10am CST.
The sale will begin with period Arts & Crafts movement works, starting with a Gustave Baumann print, titled Church Ranchos de Taos, as lot 1. The print is estimated to sell between $4,000-6,000.
Pottery by notable firms Rookwood, Pewabic, Newcomb College, Teco, Grueby, Marblehead and others will be offered. A small Jervis Pottery dish (pictured above, lot 14) decorated with a carved and glazed landscape would be a great addition to any Arts & Crafts desk and its pre-sale estimate is reasonable at $600-800.
Furniture and lighting by Gustav Stickley, L & JG Stickley, Roycrofters, Stickley Brothers, Limbert, Lifetime and others will be up for bid as well. Lot 90, a wonderful Stickley bow-arm Morris chair, has been tucked away in a private Chicago collection for many years. This is a great example of an early form and is slated to sell for $7,000-9,000. In addition, a six-light chandelier by L & JG Stickley, originally acquired from the estate of Louise Stickley in 1982 by the consignor, is lot 64. The chandelier is also estimated at $7,000-9,000 and sells just before a Gustav Stickley directors table (lot 65), in for $6,000-8,000.
The sale also has a seldom-seen Duffner & Kimberly leaded glass table lamp (lot 116) with curved recessed panels decorated with white lilies on a green ground. The lamp comes from a local consignor that has cared for it for many years and is ready to see someone else enjoy it for years to come. The pre-sale auction estimate is $4,000-6,000.
A selection of hand wrought silver and copper hollowware, flatware and jewelry predominantly by Chicago makers, including Kalo, Novick and Randahl conclude the Arts & Crafts portion of the sale (lots 140-162). Lot 144 is a fine Falick Novick bulbous pitcher (pictured); similar to the Duffner lamp, this form does not come available frequently. It’s a great design and pays homage to Novick’s Russian heritage. The pitcher is estimated to bring $800-1,200.
The Arts & Crafts portion of the sale is followed by Prairie School works, including a window by George Washington Maher (lot 168) and another by Frank Lloyd Wright (lot 169). The end of the early 20th Century Design portion of the sale will also include Navajo weavings (lots 204-209) and Tiffany Studios lamps (lots 283, 284 and 286), which are perfect additions to any Arts and Crafts interior and complement the aesthetic greatly. Over 200 lots of fine art and over 200 lots of modern design will complete the sale.
