On December 12th, California Historical Design and AC Stickley present AC Stickley’s Arts and Crafts Auction, an online auction featuring 765 lots of works from icons of the Arts and Crafts era. The range of items offered vary from the rare and distinguished items for experienced collectors to affordable quality works for the beginners in the collecting world.

For those interested in furniture, featured firms include Gustav Stickley, L&JG Stickley, Stickley Brothers, Charles Stickley, Limbert, Roycroft, Lifetime, Lakeside, JM Young, Mathews Furniture Shop, Bernard Maybeck, Karpen, Harden, Michigan Chair Co, and McHugh & Co. Ceramic offerings include works from Saturday Evening Girls, Rookwood, University City, North Dakota School of Mines, Van Briggle, Fulper, California Faience, Weller, Hampshire Pottery, Newcomb College, Teco Pottery, Grueby, early Arequipa pottery, and Dedham Pottery. Metalware includes Guild of Handicraft, Mary Batchelder, and 16 different works from Dirk Van Erp.

Dual auctions at Toomey’s: Tradition & Innovation and Art & Design

Toomey & Co. Auctioneers ended the 2020 auction year this past weekend with their two annual auctions featuring rare and important items and a wide variety of items up for bid. On Thursday, December 3, the third annual Tradition & Innovation featured a curated range of works from painters, sculptors, ceramicists, furniture designers, architects, and jewelry makers important to the 20th century, while the  Art & Design auction on December 6th will offered carefully selected lots of fine and decorative artworks, early 20th century and modern furniture, art pottery, lighting, metalwork, and more.

Art & Design highlights:

Lot 173: An early china cabinet from Gustav Stickley sold for $13,750, compared to the high estimate of $12,000.

Lot 181: A chafing dish cabinet from the Roycrofters, out of the collection of the Estates of Vera Parry and Judith Parry Gregorio, sold for $15,000, fetching nearly twice the high estimate of $8,000.

Lot 295: A small, unmarked Frank Lloyd Wright-designed table sold for $12,500 – with a realized price of more than four times the high estimate of $3,000!

The now-annual winter auction Tradition & Innovation took place this past Thursday and brought plenty of attention from online collectors. A few objects sold past the $100,000 price and a couple items selling just below it in the small but curated auction. The activities started with the sale of the first lot: an oil painting by Edward Willis Redfield featuring a scenic overlook of Boothbay Harbor in Maine, which sold for the realized price of $106,250. The 67-lot auction continued, resulting in high bids for works from Charles P. Limbert, Frank Lloyd Wright, A Teco and W.D. Gates designed lamp, James H. Winn and The Jarvie Shop, Gustav Stickley, and others.

Tradition & Innovation highlights:

Lot 8: A Grape Leaf hanging light fixture from Elizabeth Eaton Burton, made from hammered and perforated copper, sold for a realized price of $30,000. The estimates for the item were $10,000 – $20,000.

Lot 11: A rare early double oval table, from Charles P. Limbert, sold for $17,500, fetching nearly three times the high estimate of $6,000. The rarity of the piece is due to the dark finish of this particular piece.

Lot 12: Additionally from Limbert, a branded table lamp with a shade attributed to designer Forest Emerson Mann, sold for $50,000, compared to the high estimate of $30,000.

Lot 13: Three pieces of Arts and Crafts jewelry set all-time auction records in any category for their makers. The first was a Kalo Shop tiered sterline silver and blister pearl pendant necklace, featured in Rosalie Berberian’s book Creating Beauty,  sold for $22,500, compared to the high estimate of $8,000.

Lot 15: The second record-setter was another pendant necklace, from Chicago designer James H. Winn, sold for $23,750. This signed necklace made of 14K yellow gold, black opal, seed pearls, and chrysoprase came from The Paul & Terry Somerson Collection of 20th and 21st Century Metalwork and Jewelry and was estimated at $6,000 to $8,000.

Lot 16: The third record setter was another pendant necklace, this time from the Jarvie Shop and made of sterling silver chrysoprase, sold for $28,750, up nearly $24,000 more than the high estimate of $5,000. This necklace was also featured in Rosalie Berberian’s book Creating Beauty.

Lot 21: A baluster from Dankmar Adler (1844-1900) & Louis Sullivan (1856-1924) for the Chicago Stock Exchange sold for $27,500 and originally estimated at $3,000-5,000! A note from the Toomey & Co auction catalog: a similar example is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Lot 23: A table lamp with a Teco base from the collection of preservationist and avid Teco collector Timothy Pearson, sold for the realized price of $93,750: the high estimate was $80,000.

Robert Riddle Jarvie also had a pair of early Art Nouveau bronze candlesticks that brought $7,150 and Jessie M. Preston had a candlestick reach $4,875.
