An Abundance of Art Pottery at Rago’s Object & Home

On Tuesday, April 12th, Rago’s Arts and Auction Center will provide a large collection of American art pottery, furniture, lighting and decor during the Object & Home auction. Featuring pottery and furniture with varying levels of affordability, this annual auction features a number of examples from Fulper Pottery, Weller Pottery, Grueby Faience, Teco pottery  and a large number of George Ohr vases and novelty items. Furniture from Gustav Stickley and in the style of L and J.G. Stickley and Liberty & Co. A collection of ten Roycroft items is available to bid on as well as an impressive collection of silver from Georg Jensen and a cocktail set from Tiffany & Co.

While this auction features a large array of both American and European ceramics, fine art, and decorative arts, the catalog is particularly strong in American art pottery. Rago’s auctions typically deliver a strong showing of art pottery as owner David Rago is an expert in decorative ceramics and porcelain appraiser. There are nineteen lots of Fulper pottery and 38 lots of George Ohr works alone in this auction; some of which are noted as No Reserve lots. Among the items currently estimated under $1,000, the vibrant and multi-colored Fulper pottery selections offer affordability potential as some lots even feature multiple vases with a variety of different glazes.

With such a variety of color and form, we’re keeping our eye on quite a few lots from the Grueby green to the gunmetal-glazed George E. Ohr vases to the fabulously glazed Fulper vases. USA, 1899, 1897-1900
glazed earthenware each approximately: 3½ h × 2¾ dia in (9 × 7 cm)

estimate: $1,500–2,000

Vases feature ruffled rims and indigo and gunmetal glazes. Impressed signature and date to underside of each example ‘Biloxi, Miss. Mobile Clay 1899’ and ‘G.E. OHR, Biloxi, Miss.’, respectively.
