As customers are returning to shows and bookshops, new publications on figures from the Arts & Crafts movement are arriving to those hungry for new information. The publications Weller Pottery: A Clearer Vision by Frank Norman, Rookwood: The Rediscovery and Revival of an American Icon by Bob Batchelor, and Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect by Victoria Kastner come to mind as recent examples of beautifully written and published books made for your research collection or coffee table.  

Resources for would-be authors to help with publishing books are not only easier to access these days thanks to the internet, but there are almost too many websites offering a gargantuan amount of data. For those of you thinking ‘Where do I start?’ we might have your next step forward. In the tradition of providing our audience of bibliophiles and authors with resources, Arts & Crafts In August has a number of sessions for you to enjoy.

For the first time in our virtual conference offerings, a live reading will be offered on the subject of Fulper Pottery — or rather growing up with the Fulper family. Author Anne Fulper, granddaughter to master craftsman William Fulper of Fulper Pottery fame and one of three Fulper sisters who created Fulper Tile, will join us live to read from her own memoirs Shards Wednesday, August 3rd at 3:00 PM EST. In a playful reading full of family memories, she’ll tell the story through her eyes of re-discovering the long-lost Fulper glaze recipes with her sisters in the family attic and resurrecting the Fulper glazes into the new Fulper tile: here’s your chance to hear her tales and ask the author questions live.

On Saturday, August 6th, a special recorded presentation will be released to registered attendees of Arts & Crafts In August for those who have a soft spot for reading the historic periodical The Craftsman and the revival-era much beloved Style 1900. The Arts & Crafts researcher Marilyn Fish joined me for a part-presentation, part Question and answer segment about her experience in researching the life of Gustav Stickley, indexing a library of issues of The Craftsman, and her job as an editor for Style 1900. Marilyn revealed the stories she found about unknown writers of The Craftsman, her journey in research, and her influence over the modern publication started by David Rago.

 

After you hear Marilyn’s journey and get inspiration to gather your own research and write, join us later that day on August 6th at 1:00 PM EST for a discussion session on the basics of research techniques and the logistics of the publication world with exhibitor, publisher, and bookseller Peter Copeland of Turn of the Century Editions and The Parchment Press. We’ll talk resources both digital and in person, the basics of catalog reprints, and the details of the publication process in this discussion session. Don’t be surprised if published authors drop into this session to share their own experiences.
