Online Class on Arts and Crafts Furniture: “Something to Foster Rugged Independence” THIS SATURDAY
If you’re a collector of Arts and Crafts furniture, make sure you clear your schedule this Saturday afternoon.
The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms will once again hold their popular series “Living the Simple Life: the Arts and Crafts Movement at Home” as an online Zoom presentation available for collectors and enthusiasts of the Arts and Crafts movement to participate in — the latest session, which will happen April 25th at 1:00 PM EST live from Craftsman Farms’ log cabin will concentrate on furniture of the Arts and Crafts Era.
Each presentation is given by Dr. Jonathan Clancy, Director of Collections and Preservation; he examines the rise of the English and American Arts and Crafts movements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries before concentrating on material-specific sessions covering major figures in each field. This course is for design and decorative arts enthusiasts, collectors, and anyone with an interest in Arts and Crafts style and ideals. Newcomers, casual fans and long-time aficionados are all welcome!
Each fee for the course, a $25 fee, will go towards operational costs for when restrictions are lifted. “We hope everyone enjoys the course and enjoys knowing that their course fees are benefiting the museum,” says Executive Director Vonda Givens. “The support for the course has been heartening and encouraging for the entire staff.”
“Something to Foster Rugged Independence”: Furniture of the Arts and Crafts Movement
Writing in The Craftsman in October 1902, Samuel Howe described “the severe furniture” made by the United Crafts as “something to foster rugged independence and masterful resolution, and to exhibit a resourcefulness greatly needed in these times.” This class examines the different ways that furniture makers and the forms they produced met the ideals of the movement and catered to the needs of modern consumers. In examining the works of Gustav Stickley, The Roycrofters, Byrdcliffe, Charles Rohlfs, and others, we better see a diversity of aesthetic approaches to the movement as well as different economic concerns of the makers.

Exciting news from the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms: the decision has been made to extend the series by three additional classes! Each class will be held in the same Zoom environment and on the same schedule: weekly on Saturdays at 1PM EST. The last session will be on May 16th.
