Decorative Arts Auction – June 14th

Treadway will hold their Cincinnati Spring auction to be held Sunday, June 14th at 11am EST. This Decorative Arts auction offers a variety of American and European Arts and Crafts objects: a collection of Rookwood is among the ceramics being sold along with pieces by Pewabic, Teco, Marbehead, Hampshire, Grueby, Van Briggle and Newcomb. A number of Tiffany objects will be offered, including lamps, shades, candlesticks and glassware. European art glass and ceramics are featured, including Galle glass and ceramics, a large selection of Loetz, and Daum. Also included in this sale is a collection of 40 lots of modern and mid-century ceramics and sculpture, featuring Otto and Gertrud Natzler, Doyle Lane, Rose Cabat, Toshiko Takaezu, Laura Anderson, Claude Conover, Edwin and Mary Scheier and Peter Voulkous. The sale concludes with a number of works by Cuban artists such as Lolo Soldevilla and Sandu Darie.

Humler and Nolan
Since 1991, Humler and Nolan has been providing the general public auctions featuring art glass, Keramics, and Rookwood collectibles. This month, the 30th annual Rookwood auction marks the end of an era for auctionhouse Humler & Nolan as they will be closing their doors for good at the end of July. In a statement released last month, Humler & Nolan announced with heavy hearts their impending closure and their final auction weekend, moving the dates up to June 20th – 21st due to the COVID-19 crisis.
The auction will be conducted live, in real time, but with no in-person audience. All bidding will be conducted either by phone, online or by absentee bid. Preview will be conducted online or by appointment with proper personal protection equipment. The full catalog, including color photos and estimates, will be posted online at: www.humlernolan.com and www.liveauctioneers.com. Bidding will be on the condition that all auction purchases must be paid for and removed from Humler & Nolan by Friday, July 31st.
While it may be the end of a chapter in auctioneer Riley Humler’s book, his passion for collecting is far from over. “I will always be chasing pottery and paintings as it is and who knows, I may materialize in another location down the road,” says Humler. “I have made many friends over the years who share my interest in Rookwood and art and they are the real treasures of my business.”
Below are a few of many of the items up for bid during Humler & Nolan’s final Rookwood auction.
Lot No. 1476: Rookwood
Amazing Standard glaze pitcher showing a sign painter wearing a floppy hat, perched on a swing painting a large Rookwood logo with 5 flames on the side of a building. 1891 is the date in which Matt Daly produced this piece. Marks include the Rookwood logo, indicating the date, shape number 259 B, an impressed W for White clay, an incised L for Light Standard glaze and Mr. Daly’s incised initials. There is also an older paper label present with a price of $17.50 in pencil. Uncrazed but having two small, open glaze bubbles. One bubble is just beneath the spout and the other is where the handle joins the body. We occasionally see the company logo on the side of a piece but none are accompanied by the painter himself. Height is 7 3/4 inches.

Artist: Albert Valentien
Description: Early Standard pitcher with asters on scrolling vines covered by Gold Stone glazing by Albert Valentien in 1888. Height is 8 1/4 inches. Impressed with the company logo, which indicates the date, shape 412 and the incised artist cypher with a D, a dark glaze request by the artist. Uneven glaze. Unusual to have the appearance of Gold Stone on an early vessel. Excellent original condition.

Artist: Sallie Toohey
Description: Iris glaze vase with natural apple blossoms encircling the shoulder over a gray shading to tan backdrop by Sallie Toohey in 1902. Height is 7 5/8 inches. Impressed with the factory logo, date, shape 900C, W for White (Iris) glaze and the artist’s incised monogram. Fine overall crazing. Excellent condition.

Artist: Kataro Shirayamadani
Description: Mat glaze vase deorated with wisteria painted by Kataro Shirayamadani in 1944. Marks include the Rookwood logo, date, shape 6184 E and Shiri’s incised initials. Excellent original condition. Height is 7 inches.
