Online Classes on Frank Lloyd Wright & the Prairie School and Restoration Day This Saturday

This weekend, there are plenty of opportunities online to learn alongside your fellow collectors. Whether it’s learning about the Prairie School and its presence in Frank Lloyd Wright interiors or how to hire a contractor or the basics of architectural photography, there’s something for many of you to enjoy from the comfort of your home!

 

Icons of 20^th Century Design: Session Added!

The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms has extended its course “Icons of 20^th Century Design.” The final session, focused on Frank Lloyd Wright, will now be offered in two parts. As promised, Part 1, on June 20 at 1:00 EST, will focus on the Prairie School. An additional session, Part 2, on June 27 at 1:00 EST, will take attendees beyond the Prairie School and consider Frank Lloyd Wright and American Modernism.

The museum’s virtual classroom uses the Zoom video conferencing platform. Each session is $25. Following each session, paid attendees will be emailed a list of supplemental resources and the session recording, when it is available.

“To establish an Organic Integrity”: Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie School

In hindsight, it is no wonder that Chicago gave rise to the distinctive American design aesthetic we call the Prairie School, for all of the ingredients were there: a devastating fire in 1871 that destroyed three square miles of the city, tremendous population growth in the following decades, and an embrace of modernity unencumbered by historical precedent. Epitomized by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, this session explores the Prairie School aesthetic through Wright’s interiors, those of his contemporaries like Niedecken, Maher, and Elmslie, as well as firms like Linden Glass and Giannini & Hilgart.

Beyond the Prairie School: Frank Lloyd Wright and American Modernism

As quickly as his reputation had ascended in the first decades of the 20th century, Frank Lloyd Wright’s star fell as modernism took hold in the United States.  Having pioneered an architectural style that was viewed by many as quaint and decorative, Wright’s longevity was due, in part, to his ability to reinvent himself.  Seeing the success of the younger generation in Europe, as well as the United States–seminal figures like Le Corbusier, Richard Neutra, and Rudolf Schindler–who were advancing a more austere formal language, Wright responded, absorbed, and ultimately made this vocabulary his own. From Falling Water to the Guggenheim Museum and the posthumously-built Marin County Civic Center, this session explores the modernism of Wright and his contemporaries through their contributions to architecture and design.

Join Pasadena Heritage on Saturday, June 20th via Zoom to learn from experts in the field of restoration and preservation. This virtual classroom will cover three topics. Each session is 1 – 1.5 hours long. Interested participants can choose one for $10 each, or $20 for all three sessions.

“How to Hire a Contractor with Pobal Construction” – What kinds of projects require a contractor? Does my project require permits? How long will construction last and how much will it cost? Bring your project questions and or pictures for an hour discussion with a contractor.

“Picture This! Architectural Photography with Dennis Hill” – Dennis Hill has been taking beautiful photographs of Pasadena Heritage tour houses for many years. You have seen the results in our advertising, our program books, and online. Learn from him how to get the best shot when photographing great pieces of architecture.

“DIY Home Research – Learn New Skills and Resources with John Ripley” – Join this popular topic with John Ripley, one of Pasadena Heritage’s great researchers. He will discuss the various tools that you can use to learn about your home, your neighborhood, and former owners of your house without ever leaving the couch!
