October Will Be A Celebration of Ruskin, Roycroft & Stickley

Ruskin, Roycroft and the Arts & Crafts – Saturdays, October 3rd – 31st, 2020
October looks to be an incredibly busy month, especially on Saturdays with ongoing virtual classroom opportunities, tours, and the annual Craftsman Gala going virtual for the very first time.
“Ruskin, Roycroft, and the Arts and Crafts Movement” is an exciting new series of virtual talks and a collaboration from The Roycroft Campus, The Ruskin Society of North America, and The Guild of St. George that will occur on all five Saturdays in October, starting October 3rd with Professor Jim Spates. The first two gatherings will feature two internationally known Ruskin specialists: Spates, who will give his presentation on John Ruskin and the origins of the Arts and Crafts Movement as well as Dr. Peter Berman, who will reveal a Scottish perspective of Ruskin’s influence on the Arts and Crafts Movement in the United Kingdom. Additional presentations will explore Elbert Hubbard’s vision of the American Arts and Crafts Movement and how the skills of drawing, photography, writing, and creative book-making still survive today.
With eight sessions in all over the span of five Saturdays, there will be plenty to explore from Ruskin’s early vision to an artist finding inspiration through Ruskin to his days as a photographer. The influence of Ruskin on Elbert Hubbard, Hubbard’s works within the shops and publications as well as two separate presentations on the books of both Ruskin and the Roycrofters will also be explored.
Sessions will be held using the Zoom platform and all talks will include a Question and Answer session. Registration for the whole series is $50 per person, covering all eight presentations in Saturdays in October. “Fall for Stickley” – Zoom classes, Tours and the Craftsman Gala, October 2020
Enthusiasts of Gustav Stickley already know the series of virtual classroom sessions put on by The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms – every Saturday for the month of October will be a celebration and educational opportunity for all things Stickley, culminating in the annual – and first virtual – Craftsman Gala. Next month, the new series called “The Craftsman: The Life and Work of Gustav Stickley” will be a comprehensive study, revealing his works and legacy as well as new research.
Starting October 3rd, instructor Jonathan Clancy will show the comprehensive works of Stickley from the metal shop to his Craftsman Home designs and offer a look into Stickley’s biography, shedding new light on aspects of his career – including an unknown company that he founded – in session 1: “There is Properly No History; Only Biography”: The Life and Work of Gustav Stickley. Next on October 10th, Clancy’s second session will explore Stickley’s Craftsman Homes style with “‘Devoted to the New Domestic Art’: Craftsman Homes and the Birth of Stickley’s Empire“. The following Saturday, “‘The Cultivation of Human Sympathy’: Stickley’s Early Factory and the Ideal Workshop” will reveal the early history behind Stickley’s workshops and following The Stickley Museum’s annual celebration The Craftsman Gala, the virtual classroom will return on October 31st with an exploration of Stickley’s Metal Shop.
Additional events include a virtual tour of the Log House and a Panel Discussion with the Education Center Design team.
