“Fall for Stickley” Virtual Program Includes Craftsman Gala, A New Exhibit, and New Classes

by Kate Nixon

There’s plenty in store for enthusiasts, supporters, and collectors of all things Stickley – and next month, supporters from all over the country can once again learn, connect and support virtually from anywhere with an internet connection. October of 2021 will kickoff another month of Stickley appreciation with virtual celebrations and another series of classes offering new experiences that the community can explore together.

This Fall season, The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms will offer many opportunities for supporters from all over the country to connect via Zoom through online classes and celebrations; notably during the annual fundraiser The Craftsman Gala to be held virtually again on October 2nd. In addition to the upcoming Craftsman Gala, October kicks off the “Fall for Stickley” program series for museum members, where The Gamble House will join the Stickley Museum and shows their own Stickley journey within their iconic house. The program will also offer a “Thanksgiving” holiday party in the home of Ted Lytwyn, complete with a comprehensive photo tour of his collection that supporters can enjoy virtually from all over the country.

The Craftsman Gala will also kick off the Stickley Museum’s newest series of online classes. The classes will compliment the new virtual exhibit Circa 1917: Rediscovering Craftsman Farms, the largest and most comprehensive study of Craftsman Farms as part of the Stickley legacy. According to the Stickley Museum Executive Director Vonda Givens, it seems appropriate to bring the subject of their popular online classes back home to where they started. “It seems particularly appropriate this year, since our multi-session virtual course Design & History took us on a sprawling journey exploring the history of design from ancient Egypt to the Black Mountain College,” said Givens. “So, this fall, we’re returning home and returning our focus to Gustav Stickley and to the vision that inspires our daily work.”

New Series of Classes – “CIRCA 1917: REDISCOVERING CRAFTSMAN FARMS”
Saturdays, starting October 9th through November 6th at 1:00 PM Eastern

Via Zoom Online Classroom

These five sessions explore The Stickley Museum’s exhibition of the same name and provide a chance to dig deeper into the history of Craftsman Farms as it evolved during the Stickley family’s ownership from 1908-17. As a school, a working farm, and a country retreat, the property grew to nearly 650 acres during Stickley’s ownership and served as the family’s home. From the landscape, to the buildings, to the furnishings, this exhibition is a comprehensive view of the evolution of Craftsman Farms that combines the latest research and documentation to provide the most comprehensive view of Craftsman Farms ever offered. Featuring original objects, previously-unknown original buildings, and glimpses into parts of the campus normally unseen by visitors, this series gives audiences a chance to explore Craftsman Farms as an insider, to see it as it stood when the Stickleys departed in 1917, giving unprecedented access to those both new and familiar with Stickley’s own utopian creation.
