Registration Opens for Stickley Syracuse Seminar

Additional plans have been announced for the one-day seminar entitled Gustav Stickley: Reflections on a Legacy; Preservation for the Future. The seminar events will be held on Saturday, September 23 from 10:00am-3:00pm at the Onondaga Historical Association, 321 Montgomery Street in downtown Syracuse, New York.

Speakers at the seminar will include author and Gustav Stickley expert, David Cathers, as well as Vonda Givens, the Executive Director of The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms.

In addition, attendees will be able to watch a preview of Herb Stratford’s documentary Gustav Stickley: American Craftsman, hear a restoration update on the Gustav Stickley House, and see the original inglenook settle from Gustav Stickley’s Columbus Avenue home.

The cost of the day-long seminar is $125 and includes a box lunch. Seating is limited to 50 participants.

The Queen Anne style home was purchased by Gustav Stickley in 1900. Following a 1901 fire on Christmas Eve, Stickley redesigned the interior of the home with the first-ever Craftsman design. Stickley lived in the home on and off until his death in 1942. Later it was sold and converted into apartments. While many changes to the structure have occurred over the years, the house contains the relatively intact original Arts & Crafts interior from 1902.

The restoration project involves several local Syracuse organizations and will take place in two phases. Phase one building stabilization and exterior restoration is currently underway. The home will ultimately become the property of the Onondaga Historical Association who plan to operate a combination museum and boutique inn. The GSHF serves primarily as a fundraising body to support the restoration project. The September seminar will serve to share the story of the preservation efforts and place the home in the broader context of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
