Lighting, Furniture, and Ceramics Sell at Treadway

by Kate Nixon

A strong collection of ceramics and lighting sold last weekend at Treadway Gallery, bringing five figured realized prices to lots in an auction that offered more than 400 lots of furniture, ceramics, lighting, and more.

Treadway Gallery held their 20th Century Art & Design auction this past Sunday, April 7th in Cincinnati, Ohio. In a sale that featured several pieces from multiple movements and notably by Charles Rohlfs and Gustav Stickley as well as modern pieces by Frank Lloyd Wright, collections featuring american ceramics like those of Van Briggle, early high glaze Newcomb and a selection of Haviland, were featured. A Grueby vase sold for $20,000, a Newcomb pottery vase sold for $22,500 and a collection of European glass including pieces from Galle and ceramics from Los Angeles, often sold very well.  An enameled ceramic signed Galle “Bee Vessel” sold for $16,000 – nearly $12,000 more than it was expected to sell for. Additional Galle pieces, like a footed vase and even a ceramic inkwell, sold past their estimates.

There were additionally a few examples of furniture that sold in the five figure category, including a Charles Rohlfs oaken signed hall bench in “excellent original condition” sold past its high estimate of $10,000 and even a well-preserved Gustav Stickley server sold for nearly twice as much its value. Lastly, Tiffany lighting did well, including a Daffodil table lamp (featured below) selling for an impressive $46,875 and a pair of Tiffany sconces sold for $12,500 – twice the high estimate. A Handel Cattails lamp made from bronzed metal and glass for the shade sold for $13,750 – the shade and the base were both signed and listed in excellent original condition.
