For those seeking Roycroft book rarities, a special auction just announced this past weekend shows a life collection of special publications that embody the craftsmanship of the Roycroft name.
Rago Arts and Auction Center and Toomey & Co. Auctioneers have announced a special Lambertville preview exhibition of highlights from the upcoming auction Love in Abundance: The Life Collection of Richard Blacher. This stunning and comprehensive collection features beautiful publications, an impressive selection of bookends, and an assortment of furniture and lighting collected by Richard Blacher, capturing the spirit of this important community within the Arts & Crafts movement.
A number of highlights featured in the auction include a leather-bound publication titled An Appreciation of Thomas W. Lawson by Citizens of Albert Lea ($20,000–30,000), featured with a Roycroft presentation box. The book features binding by Louis Kinder with hand-calligraphed details by Dard Hunter and watercolors by Alexis Fournier. Other recently released highlights include An Author’s Edition of The Complete Writings of Elbert Hubbard ($20,000–30,0000), a Francis and J.C. Leyendecker Sketchbook dedicated to Lawrence (Mazzy) Mazzanovich ($10,000–15,000) and several copies of Henry David Thoreau’s Friendship are also among the rare works in this special auction.
Other Roycroft works in lighting and metalworks shown on the auction website are a table lamp ($7,500-$10,000), a hand-hammered copper tray with poppies ($3,000-4,000), a rare and adjustable reading stand ($3,000-4,000), and a pair of rare Old Willow Stump bookends ($2,000-2,500).
