“Fall For Stickley” In October!
by Kate Nixon
As previously announced, in place of Stickley weekend, the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms will be virtually hosting a whole month of Stickley! “Fall for Stickley” is a program series, on October Saturdays, devoted to all-things-Stickley and culminating with The Craftsman Gala on Sat., Oct. 24.
The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms has, since March, been providing a consistent schedule of online educational Zoom courses. Museum Executive Director Vonda Givens hopes to welcome returning students and new students to their new program in October. “With this series of ticketed programs and Member-exclusive events, we aimed to offer something for everyone, whether you’re a long time Stickley fan or a newcomer,” says Givens. “If you haven’t attended one of our virtual programs yet, give it a try. Our online community is friendly and welcoming.”The newest series dedicated to the study of Stickley,“The Craftsman: The Life and Work of Gustav Stickley” will start this Saturday, October 3rd as the first session “There is Properly No History; Only Biography” covers the personal and professional biography of Stickley. From the Stickley Museum website:
In his essay “History,” from 1841, Ralph Waldo Emerson made the bold–and strikingly modern–claim that “All history is subjective. There is properly no history; only biography.” We begin the celebration of Stickley this month with a close look at his biography, examining Stickley’s life and tracing his output from the earliest forms we know of, to the latest pieces he made in his long and storied career. The session will shed new light on aspects of Stickley’s career and demonstrate that the origins of his Arts and Crafts sensibilities began well before he published “New Furniture from the Workshop of Gustave Stickley” in 1900 and discuss–for the first time–a previously unknown company that he founded.
