“The Importance of Restoring the Gustav Stickley House” : A Zoom Panel This Tuesday

by Kate Nixon

If you’re curious about the status of the capital campaign to restore the Gustav Stickley House in Syracuse or an admirer of Gustav Stickley’s legacy, mark your calendars for September 22nd at 11:00AM and join an exclusive panel for a virtual discussion!

The Gustav Stickley House Foundation will hold the special discussion on their restoration of the famed Gustav Stickley House and its importance locally to Central New York and admirers of Gustav Stickley’s legacy countrywide, historic preservation, architecture and design and the American Arts & Crafts Movement. Called “The Importance of Restoring the Gustav Stickley House,” the discussion will explore the next steps of the restoration process and what needs to be done to complete the interior.

Via Zoom, the exclusive discussion panel will include:

  • Joanie Mahoney, COO SUNY ESF
  • Thom Filicia, Interior and Product Designer
  • Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon
  • Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh
  • Gustav Stickley House Foundation President David Rudd.

Rudd says of the special virtual discussion “On March 10th when we shut down the capital campaign, we didn’t think it was an appropriate time as money was needed for other things. Now it is the right time to put on this event and to discuss the America’s Treasures Grant and discuss the impact of the house in the neighborhood.” Rudd will delve into the numbers and the money still needed to raise in order to receive the amount of the full grant.

Iconic designer Gustav Stickley had purchased the Queen Anne style house at the turn of the century and after a Christmas Eve fire damaged the house, he redesigned the interior into an example of his “Craftsman Style” house, inspiring generations of home design in American homes. After the house survives with the Stickley family and gains a historic place protection, the house needed maintenance – and in 2016, the Gustav Stickley House Foundation was formed with the goal of completely restoring the house. Future plans included transforming it into a historic house museum and guest house.
