In 1911, the Robert C. Spencer-designed Rock Island home for Susanne Denkmann was completed. She and her new husband, John H. Hauberg, moved into it when they returned from their honeymoon that summer. The Prairie style home and carriage house crown a 10-acre hilltop, surrounded by grounds designed by Jens Jensen, a noted Prairie style landscaper. Both Spencer and Jensen were well known as masters of the then “new” and uniquely Illinois Prairie style. This estate is a culmination of outstanding design. It retains its beautiful tulip motif in its art glass windows, fireplace tiles, stone urns, carved quarter-sawn oak staircase, decorative stone exterior ornamentation and ceiling design. In addition, a few original George Niedecken designed pieces of furniture also remain with the home.
