Mercer & Fonthill Museums

This complex of buildings were designed and constructed by Henry Chapman Mercer. Included is his 44-room home (1908-1910), the Mercer museum (1913-1916), and Moravian Pottery and Tile Works (1912). All are influenced and decorated in the Arts & Crafts style with a special emphasis on Henry Mercer’s famous tiles.

Moravian Pottery & Tile Works

In 1912 Henry Mercer established this poured concrete factory to implement his study of the production of tiles during the Middle Ages. As would be expected, the factory is decorated with tiles he and his craftsmen produced, and also shipped in large quantities across the country. It is currently a museum although tiles are still produced based on Mercer’s original designs.
