Toomey & Co Auctioneers will hold their bi-annual Art & Design auction, Sunday June 9th at 10 AM. Featuring property from the Stahr Collection of Barrington, Illinois and the Collection of Wilbert and Marilyn Hasbrouck of Chicago as well as other important Chicago collectors, the works of Gustav Stickley, Dirk Van Erp, Teco, Charles Rohlfs, Van Briggle Pottery & Tile, Charles P. Limbert and more will be up for bid once more.
Highlighted within the auction are several pieces of historical significance – for example, an intriguing mahogany, copper, and earthenware chafing dish from Charles Rohlfs with an estimate of $2,000 to $3,000 has been featured in the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Dallas Art Museum and Carnegie Museum of Art among others. A Frank Lloyd Wright chair designed in 1909 for the W. Scott Thurber Art Gallery in Chicago is featured – lot 346 – and is estimated to sell for $10,000 to $15,000. Even a Louis Sullivan door plate from the Chicago Stock Exchange and a Frank Lloyd Wright table used as a centerpiece for the Prairie Avenue Bookstore will be placed up for bid.
With the large selection of Arts & Crafts style lots in store, Toomey & Company continues to include icons of the early movement to the delight of American collectors. “We have always had a strong representation of fine furniture and decorative arts from the Arts & Crafts movement and will continue to do so,” said John Walcher, Toomey & Co Vice President and Senior Specialist for Early 20th Century Design. “Our intent is to show the changes of design over time, while shifting some earlier periods outside of their chronological order, potentially cross-pollinating ideas of aesthetics. It’s an opportunity to introduce and educate new buyers to all periods of design without any breaks or gaps.”
